A Place to Call Home

A Place to Call Home

This will be the 5th fall season Ollie Mae has been in business and we felt it was time to shake it up a bit. (but just a bit) For years, people have asked us where they can shop Ollie Mae outside of the show circuit and for years our answer has been "online only". You see, Amy and I both have jobs outside of OM. This whole idea started as just that an idea. It was a little dream we had... something fun to do together that could help others and give us a little extra money as well. Through the years we have learned so much about the retail industry. For better or worse we have grown to love our little Airstream and its customers more than we could have ever dreamed. When we talked last spring about doing some things differently with OM a permanent space has always been something we had in the back of our minds. So we prayed... our children are getting older, school, work and home life is more demanding than ever. How can we still do this thing we love but in a new, fresh way that works for us? Enter- Lone Star Mercantile. This new retail space checked all the boxes for our needs and we are proud to be one of over 200 venders who now call it home. So, 7 days a week (M-Sat 10-7pm, Sun 12-5pm) You can visit this fantastic retail space and find a little piece of Ollie Mae. We are "parked" in the middle (Booth M12) and we will be putting in new inventory weekly for our sweet customers. So, come on by... stroll around and enjoy this new little destination in Allen, Tx. Oh, and not to worry... Ollie Mae will still be on the road! Our next stop will be Vintage Market Days in Decatur, Tx! See you soon!!

Share Hope

Share Hope

I recently picked up a new book a friend of mine told me to read... The title, "When I lay my Isaac down" If you have not had the honor of reading its words you should. It's the story of a mother walking through an unspeakable family tragedy and the principles they learned in the process that bolstered their faith and renewed hope. Kent writes, "When hope is alive, there is always the chance that something that has gone awry will still have a positive outcome... We hold on to the belief that even if what we see happening today is unbearable, ugly, unjust, and unfair, the probability of a brighter day is around the corner because God is the Great Redeemer."

Recently, I became friends with the precious people behind the Pure Hope Foundation. They not only believe brighter days are around the corner but they will be making it a reality for many women.  Currently they are working on creating a place called the Hope House in Mt Vernon, TX. This will be a refuge for women rescued from sex trafficking and transiting back into mainstream life. Currently they have the home bought, have painted and started the rehab process but now need all the little things that make a house a "home". Amy and I are so excited to see how God is moving through people we love so close to home and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to help on a local level! SO, with the backing of our dear friends at the Lagosette school in Haiti, we will be taking the 10% we normally give to them for the next three shows and be giving that money to the Pure Hope Foundation. This money will be used to buy pillows, art work, lighting, etc and help provide a beautiful place for these women to call home.
We also want to encourage all of our shoppers to give as well. Please visit the website for Pure Hope and donate what you can. Follow their journey on Facebook and Instagram and  pray for them and the women they will be serving. They are asking for short and long term contributions and trust me when I say your money will be used in such beautiful and life changing ways!

BE BRAVE

February 19, 2016

BE BRAVE

brav·er·y (noun) courageous behavior or character. synonyms: courage, valor, intrepidity, nerve, daring, fearlessness, audacity, boldness, dauntlessness, stoutheartedness, heroism. Our first show of the spring season will be here before we know it! This will be our third show with Vintage Market Days Tulsa and we couldn't be happier. Each show carries with it a theme... You can see it reflected in the decor, the t-shirt design and it's just a general feeling in the air. This time around that theme is Be Brave. For Amy and I this sentiment carries with it a deep personal meaning. You see we pray relentlessly we can teach our babies what being brave really looks like everyday. Whether that is having the boldness to speak truth in the lies or being fearless in starting your own business. It could be as daring as serving others abroad or having the nerve to share a meal with the homeless man on the corner. It could be a simple as having the courage to get out of bed and face another day when everything seems stacked against you. So, as we gear up for what the new spring show season brings we will be praying for each of you... May you take on each day with a boldness and make every moment a Brave one. ;)

Vintage Market Days- Southfork Ranch

Amy and I have grown to love the little traveling show called Vintage Market Days. It is one of the best shows around and we are so proud to be a part of this sweet group. They have become an extended family of sorts for us and we adore the owners and vendors alike. Each show is individually owned but they all work collectively to achive a common goal and in our experience it is to give everyone involved a fun, creative, and nostalgic place to shop for those pieces you can't find anywhere else. The food is always delicious and the music is always fabulous.

Our first stop this fall show season will be with Vintage Market Days Southfork Ranch. If you are unfamiliar with Southfork here is a little history... Southfork began in 1978, when Lorimar Productions chose the North Texas showplace as the site for the CBS-TV series "Dallas". The hit series, which counted millions of viewers across the United States and in 95 foreign countries as fans, was originally broadcast in the United States from 1978 to 1991. Because of the ranch's high profile on television, the beautiful white mansion, the pool, the barns and surroundings quickly became a tourist mecca.

We hope you will grab a friend and join us for a fun day of shopping in this most unique of surroundings! We hope you are able to see and experience why Vintage Market Days was voted one of the "7 Flea Markets and Barn Sales not to miss in 2015" by Country Living Magazine! See you at the ranch!

Spring has Sprung!

I do love winter. With it comes cozy fireplace moments, hot coco, holiday memories and the ability to wear that fabulous coat that's been hanging in your closet all year. It's been a lovely winter and the snow was fun but raise your hand if you are ready for SPRING!!! Spring is my favorite time of year. All the buds and flowers are blooming, the air is just warm enough to have picnics outside and the color pallet brings a smile to my face!

First, I think it's important for you to know what the trend colors are for Spring 2015. These colors are determined by the fashion gurus and introduced to the public during Fashion Week in the fall. Most of the designs you will see on the runway will be over the top and not something you would ever wear in public unless you are Lady Gaga. Case in point...

While I can appreciate the creativity and feathery touch behind this look there is one thing that becomes clear... Pastels are in! I have attached a few color charts that will show you the exact color pallet that you will see a lot of this spring and summer.

I think it is important to state that pastels can be tricky. Because of the washed out tones in the color they tend to "wash out" the complexion of the person wearing them. The key to any trend is moderation. If you have more of a yellow undertone in your skin you will not want to go out and buy a custard colored dress. But you could buy yourself a custard colored purse. A little self awareness is important when introducing pastels into your wardrobe. This is great news for those of you with tan or darker skin tones! Pastels will look stunning on you in any form. I have attached a few examples of ways to wear the pastel trend well.

The second thing repeated on the runway were floral prints! I'm not talking about your grandmas floral couch! Oh No! I am talking about beautiful, bright prints that will have you dancing in the street because you feel so good!

Oh wait, this is not exactly what I had in mind. But this...

I LOVE a floral print. Just make sure you are thinking about proportion and amount when you wear it. Pair a floral shirt with a solid pant, a floral dress with a blazer. Or, if you are a little daring rock the all floral look but pair it with an accessory that will compliment and help draw the eye to other places.

The last trend I will mention today of Spring/Summer 2015 are wide legged trousers. They are making a comeback in a big way and I am thrilled! Wide legged pants if tailored correctly look great on every body type. They make the long legged girl look even longer and they give the illusion of long legs to all of us girls at a height disadvantage. They also tend to hang in such a way many flaws are concealed. Did I say already how much I love them?! Ok, so on that note here are some great examples!

You will notice the pastels, prints, and even a floral blazer. All great ways to mix trends and look super chic.  Important note about the tailoring of these pants. The length is very important on these babies. Too short and you will look squatty and too long they will puddle around your ankles. Decide what kind of shoe you will be wearing with the pant and whatever you decided make sure they are long enough to hit the top of your foot and allow for a slight break in the front. A good seamstress will know! Basically you want these as long as you can go without the pants tripping you up or dragging the floor. If you have them tailored for heels then wearing them with flats is a bad idea.

In conclusion, it's time to put away all the black and grey! Embrace color, floral prints and pants that flow. You will be on trend in no time. ;)
